Take a look at Teresa Chun-Wen Cheng’s project about dyke hair cuts. Hair is an important medium for which we present gender, race, and status. Cheng’s project sheds to light how queer women use hair to present their gender and sexuality. She says that these haircuts have been normalized as signs of “dykeness” so not participating in them makes you invisible inside the community and out. Cheng notes that all these dyke hair cuts are predominantly cuts that can only be made with “white hair”, therefore excluding women of color (and just women without straight hair) from this important symbol of sexual transgression. The full project can be found in the Queer Zine archives.
